228 / coucal

Think this is the mother Coucal - she's just caught a baby
water dragon, for her endlessly hungry chick, already nearly as big,
while the mother is looking quite ragged & thin.
They're quite heavy birds, & not such good flyers.

205 / wildlife

Theres a kind of cuckoo, a Coucal,
 that live around here,
it was panicked by a neighbours dog, today

too fast for me

they are quite large & usually unafraid,
especially when hiding in a tree

here's an echidna, haven't seen it for many months,
perhaps because of a dry spell after last winter

& the Terns are seasonal
- or here in Byron only some of the year.

198 / wet

Christmas & New Year was mostly wet
& humid

hot, even though it doesn't look it, somehow

the peacock was in a larger Pandanus

or strutting around a park, north of Byron Bay.

197 / pelican

At the beach one day, very few people around

this pelican & I met

we looked in each other's eyes for what seemed a long time

then he shook his head in a wonderfully funny way
& flew away

112 / visitor

A kookaburra visited one morning this week,
I always enjoy to see & hear them. They have incredible hearing,
& will watch & listen for minutes,
then swoop on a worm or small snake thats under the surface.

& other interesting posts from the Asian Art Museum

109 / morning

on my morning walk, near the beach, Corellas.
There were large flocks out west when I was a kid,
perhaps they are here for a break from the drought.

wonderful bark

a large tree, don't know what kind

100 / really!

Planted some sunflowers in December

the rosella knew when they were ready

after I cut them down, I found the parrot's message..
or was it the sunflower's?

60/ birdtrees

Somehow the leaves of tropical trees
more often resemble birds

25/ for the Mac

Decided I wanted a very light image for the new desktop,
(though I put it together on my old pc, didn't feel like
fiddling with too many unknowns at one time)
But then I went through some folders, & decided on

this one, instead.
It's so great to see them big on the screen.
Heard a little of Alim Qasimov the other night,
my favourite singer,
it wont be 'live' for long though.

15/ pause

There's a great archeology museum in Istanbul, with
pieces from much of that area's history.
I moved the twin sphinx so they
could experience a night at the museum

& another wonderful collection filled my eyes with
exquisite detail that later flitted over marble panels..
it's such a multi-layered city,
lending itself to labyrinthine thoughts..

14/ travel

Often, there, I felt the pull of history
as one does in a place of myth & legend.
Also a welcome.

These time travellers were gentler visitors in a way,
except when they weren't..

It's the cross-overs, the overlaps of ideas, dreams, myths ~
like the spark of neurons firing
in unexpected ways ~
that really interests me in images.

08/ when a story comes

When a story comes, the words fly from somewhere else
into your mind, & then somehow onto a page,
or out of your mouth.
Into your wings.

The story comes by it's own path, sometimes from so far off.
Even if you can't quite hear the words,
you can sense the gift of it.

I like the ones that spring from the earth,
the stories that have been hiding in faraway places
waiting for just this moment
to alight as birds.
